I stumbled upon this photo on Shufitri’s Instagram account and DM-ed my best friend instantly because I knew immediately that his work was amazing.
I mean, why should I hide such a talented person from the world? That’s rude, guys. Come on. Shufitri did a series of photos on his Tumblr called Interstice and it is thus far my favourite artwork by him.
Read on as we delve deeper into this young creative’s mind:
I’m 23, still a student. Trying to finish my thesis so I could finish my degree once and for all. I’m from Sungai Petani, Kedah!
How did you hone your talent?
I do not have an artistic background. Aside from my younger brother, I don’t have any other family members who actually do any kind of art. Growing up, I like to sketch figures of people because I like to watch how people move.
What are your thoughts on the art scene in KL?
I am more exposed to the performing arts scene, which I find incestuous because the community is small. The same idea applies with the art scene. Anywhere I go, I’m bound to see friendly familiar faces. I try to expose myself to as many things happening around me as much as possible. Everyone needs everyone’s support.
What do you wish to see more of in KL in terms of art?
I feel like arts is to be shared and be accessed to all. Appreciation from the community is important because that’s how it grows and sustains itself.
Any local artists we should look out for?
I am a fan of Nadhir Nor’s sketches. His work has all these details that are so interesting to see because they tell stories all in one picture.
Who, dead or alive, would you like to collaborate with?
For now, there is no one else I would like to collaborate with other than my younger brother.
List 5 things that cause your imagination to run wild. (Intangibles/tangibles)
Theatre, music, literature, places, fashion.
If you could be a piece of art in any museum, what and where would you be?
If I were to be a piece of art, I’d be a portrait. It would not only stay in one museum but would travel around for everyone to experience. In other words, going on tour like a rock star, haha.
What is your favourite art medium and why?
My brush pen is my favorite tool to work with at the moment. I like how it flows from my hand and into the paper. Other than that, I use my Paper app on my phone because it’s easier for me to sketch on the go. I could take a picture of a place and let my imagination go wild by sketching on top of it.
If you could try a new art medium you’ve never used before, what would it be and why?
I’ve always wanted to try using clay. I want to learn how it works so I could have fun and make something out of it.
Feature image entitled Ezzati Amira.
Pst, he’s recently started working with needle and thread, so I’d keep my eyes peeled if I were you.
