Self-Care: Menses Edition

We all know that getting your period is a bitch. If my period was a person, I would block, mute and delete that bitch out of my life.

But that’s womanhood for you.

Not only do you get boobs and amazing curves, you also bleed for a week every month! Yay!

Let’s be real, no one feels their best whenever they’re on their period. We feel cranky and bloated, not to mention the aches and horrible cramps.

The most important thing I feel when dealing with your period is listening to what your body needs.

Pamper youself as much as you want/need, don’t let anyone tell you how you should act when you’re on your period. I mean when you think about it, your uterus is fucking shedding, okay?

Here’s how you make your period much more tolerable:

  1. Hot water bottle.

I cannot stress how many times the hot water bottle has saved me whenever I’m on my period. If you don’t have one, you don’t have to invest in a super expensive one. Daiso has them for RM5.30 and it’s covered in this soft fur thing, so it doesn’t burn your skin. Just curl up in a ball, hug the water bottle and watch RuPaul’s Drag Race.

2. Drink lots of water!

If you drink on average 8 glasses of water a day, DRINK MORE. You don’t want to get dehydrated when you’re on your period. Some women avoid drinking water when they’re on their period because they want to avoid bloating but that isn’t the case here.

Putting as much H2O in your system will help lessen the cramps and your flow will be less bloody. Carry a water bottle around wherever you go and avoid ordering sugary drinks whenever you eat out.

During this time of month, your water bottle is your best friend.

3. Exercise.

Now, when it’s that time of the month we’re always super lazy to get up and stretch what with the cramps as well as aches. However, it is quite the contrary.

Exercise can help with cramping and boost your energy to keep you going!

You don’t have to go to the gym and do any of that hardcore workout you would usually opt for. Simple stretches would suffice. You can try yoga or pilates. My favourite go-to workout would definitely be pilates. I religiously follow Blogilates and it’s super easy. Who knew a 10 minute workout could tire you out?

4. Stay away from caffeine, girl.

Caffeine will make your PMS symptoms worse. So try to cut down on your caffeine intake, because it will definitely help you in the long run. If you’re a coffee addict and need coffee to function, then just drink half a cup just to get you going then switch to tea for the rest of the day.

5. Sleep all you want.


It’s super common for you to feel fatigue whenever it’s that time of month. Just give in to the fatigue and sleep.

Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep a day, your body deserves it. After all that sleep you’ve done all night, make sure you wake up and do some stretches or go out for a walk. You’ll feel so much better and way more energised than you did the day before.

6. Meet your cravings halfway.


If you’re not like me and want to maintain that sexy waist when you’re on your period, but you’ve got a 101 cravings, meet them halfway.

If you’re craving for fries, opt for sweet potato fries. If you’re craving for chocolate, have dark chocolate instead.

Fun fact: When you’re on your period, you lose so much magnesium in your body. This is where cacao from dark chocolate can help you regain those nutrients. Try to stay away from unnecessary sugar because it’s bad for you.

To be frank, though, you’re on your damn period once a month and if you want a bar of chocolate as well as that bag of Haribo sweets, then fucking go for it.

7. Get yourself a period-tracking app.


My period has been really inconsistent throughout the years, but as of late it’s been pretty consistent. Being the Tasha that I am, I’m so forgetful that I always end up getting a surprise when I wake up.

A period-tracking app like Kindara is great. Not only are you able to track your period, you can interact with other girls on there. It even tracks your fertility!

With these apps you don’t have to ask yourself why you’re crying at a cat video or craving for animal-style fries at 3AM.

Treat your body right no matter the occasion because it deserves it. It functions 24/7 for you, so take extra good care of it.
